Between February 2010 through April 2010, Lucky Press will be accepting submissions for the 2010–2011 seasons. We plan on publishing 3 - 5 titles, so read our guidelines carefully to make sure your topic fits our company.
Submissions received before February 1, 2010 may be held until our consideration period beginning in February, but will not be responded to prior to February. To confirm receipt, send by mail and affix a USPS confirmation slip.
For 2010-2011, Lucky Press will consider nonfiction and fiction in the following categories:
- Ohio (fiction/nonfiction);
- nonfiction: parenting special needs children;
- nonfiction: Appalachia;
- nonfiction: finding love (note: qualifications to write such a book are of the utmost importance; author should have strong Internet presence);
- fiction: womens;
- poetry (must have at least 75 poems and be a resident of Ohio);
- nonfiction: coping with grief;
- Fiction: Young Adult (author must have a strong marketing platform and Internet presence).
We are especially looking for books about:
- caring for cockatoo parrots;
- fiction taking place in Ohio (excluding those with subjects noted below);
- true stories about people whose lives were completely changed and how they coped with it.
We are not interested in:
- novels about spies, terrorism, murders, rape, prostitution, the sex-trade, weapons- or drug-trafficking;
- childrens picture books;
- science fiction;
- fiction featuring demons or post-apocolyptic world that will give Editor-in-Chief nightmares;
- sad divorce tales;
- graphic novels;
- political topics (right, left, or in the middle).
Lucky Press does not offer an advance against royalties. We do offer authors a traditional royalty on book sales. Authors are expected to help market their books using social networking, blogs, and outreach to their local stores and libraries. Lucky Press provides press releases, flyers, a webpage, an 800# for radio interviews, listing on Amazon and with other online sellers, possible distribution in the UK, and a book that is professionally produced.
If you are interested in contacting Lucky Press about your manuscript, follow these 7 easy steps:
1) Finish your manuscript
2) Write an excellent cover letter introducing yourself. Let us know if you have sent your manuscript information out to other publishers or to agents.
3) Include in your cover letter a short biography about yourself that tells us why you are uniquely qualified to write this book, any previous publications, your education, where you live and what you are willing/able to do to market your book.
4) After the cover letter, include a 300-500-word synopsis of your book. It is also helpful to include the titles of books that you believe are similar to your book or would appeal to the same sort of readers.
5) If your book is fiction, send the first chapter.
6) If your book is nonfiction, send the Table of Contents, Preface, if any, and first chapter.
7)Paste the above into the body of an email and EMAIL to "submissions at luckypress dot com". Be sure to write the words "manuscript query" in the subject line, otherwise Outlook Express may send it to our "junk mail" file.[Note, If you do not receive confirmation of your submission via email within 5 business days, please resend the email or mail your submission. Sending by email is not a guarantee that it is received at our end. We've been in business 10 years and still find this frustrating (especally if you have an AOL or Yahoo email address). If you have concerns that your submission may not have been received, mail a cover letter with your email address, snail mail address and phone number, bio and synopsis to Lucky Press, LLC, PO Box 754, Athens, OH 45701-0754. If we are interested, we will contact you to request the first or more chapters. Please do not send unsolicted chapters/manuscripts/large stuffed envelopes or manuscript boxes by mail. This results in our having to wait in line at the post office to retrieve your materials from behind the counter.
We will not open any attachments or respond to unsolicted emails with attachments.
When we receive your email, we will confirm receipt of it.
We are small, we can become overwhelmed with queries... so please allow 1 month for a response. If we are interested, we will respond by email requesting more information. If we are not interested, we will decline by email. Please do not phone Lucky Press about your submission; this will not help your chances. Your manuscript must sell itself, just like a book on a bookstore shelf or Amazon page does.
